of Mediation

This short article proposes a critical engagement with Digital Theory, a book published in 2025 by M. Beatrice Fazi, Alexander R. Galloway, Matthew Handelman, and Leif Weatherby and their related discussions surrounding mediation, representation, abstraction, and thought. Here, we will revisit some key points of the book and we will argue that the digital is best understood as the format through which mediation becomes operable, from a position that tends towards the dynamics of the digital immersed into a material grounding.A Digital Theory of Mediation: Discretization In-Formation

At the core of what we can understand from what digital means is discretization. We will propose that discretization works with its own technical logics as a condition for the emergence of identifiable units, values, and relations. The article proposes that the central philosophical problem is not the opposition between digital and its others, such as the analog, or some kind of oppositional exteriority, nor the relation between thought and world, but the tension between movement and staticity.

Language will serve here as a privileged example of this dynamic because it simultaneously fragments continuity into discrete units enabling abstraction, repetition, and symbolic operation while it can only happen as a technical logic that is in-formation, that is, something that, up to some point, stills continuous. Drawing on digital theory and post-Deleuzian debates, the article develops an account of the digital as a framework for producing fixed points within informational flows.

A recurring tendency within discussions surrounding the digital has been to directly oppose it to a kind of embodiment, matter, continuity, or reality itself. Such oppositions often reproduce an older metaphysical distinction between the abstract and the material.

Recent digital theory has challenged this view. Yet important questions remain unresolved. If the digital is not opposed to matter, what exactly is its relation to material processes? If discretization is fundamental to digital operations, what is the ontological status of the continuous from which discrete units emerge? And if abstraction through the processes that make the discrete possible is inseparable from the production of thought, can the digital be understood as a condition of thinking itself?

This article argues that the digital should be understood primarily as the format of mediation itself, that is, that what implies both the preconditions of mediation as well as the shape of its output. The digital as a format organizes material processes through discretized frames that render them operable, but in any sense it opposes materiality. More so, matter is essential for our understanding of the digital. In this sense, the digital concerns the production of fixed units, boundaries, and values within broader informational continuities, it depends and, at the same time, it works producing materials.

Matter In-Formation

Digital mediation doesn’t imply a disembodiment–any form of madiation implies some kind of embodiment–and, neither, as we’ve seen, it’s opposed to matter. On the contrary, it allows a new way to approach embodiment; matter here is essential, because matter is produced and mediated through these discrete variations, through this understanding of the digital as a form of mediation.

Instead, it provides a format through which material processes become differentiated and represented. Matter becomes informed through discrete operations. Digital mediation produces specific configurations of matter in-formation. What matters philosophically is how digital systems organize material processes into identifiable forms. 

From this perspective, the digital should be understood as a form of informational organization. The digital establishes conditions under which values can be produced, exchanged, stored, and transformed. Its significance lies in the establishment of operational frameworks.

Discretization and the Production of Fixed Units
A central assumption in many philosophical debates is that continuity is primary while discreteness is secondary. According to this view, discrete units are merely abstractions imposed upon an underlying continuous reality.While such positions correctly emphasize process and becoming, they risk reducing discretization to an illusion. Discretization is better understood as the production of fixed units within a continuous field. It does not, in any sense, negate continuity; rather, it makes continuity intelligible and actionable. Every act of differentiation establishes boundaries. These boundaries build values, identities, and operational distinctions.

Language provides perhaps the clearest example. Linguistic signifiers establish a set of data, as differentiated units, that is put in-formation and within a specific technical logic and multilayered complexities. Words isolate figures from backgrounds, a thing and its other. Allowing the appearance of specific formats for identities and exchanges.

Through language, we go from the discrete towards a continuous, and from continuity to discretized into symbolic forms of structures or contextualities that are built upon the very continuity of the in-formational dynamic that is being built from the previous discretization.

Discreteness becomes a kind of epistemic illusion floating atop a world that is instead inherently continuous (and hence, analog). We disagree with this sort of analog chauvinism. If the analog exists, it is coequal with the digital, not superior to it.

Is it truly possible to escape the continuous? As we see, the existence of discrete and continuous can’t work as a linear, mechanical, binary order of reality. Instead, we propose a dynamism that works recursively, understanding what has been discretized as a very simple scale; the scale of the unit. That is something that is not contained, but something that, once activated, can become an unscalable part of a dynamic process of continuity, that is, a process where the unit becomes in-formation.

We are not saying here we should understand the continuous as analog and analog as an opposition towards digital. A digital form of mediation is also a specific form for becoming information, that is, a specific format for the continuous. Rather than only mediation, digital establishes a closed framework that acts as a map, that is, as a form of economy, where value is produced, distributed, exchanged and stored in a very specific way.

Discretization is, first of all, a dynamic towards the production of the fixed, the static, that is, the very way the outputs of mediation works; allocating an enclosed value, following a certain format, producing a set of orders and units that compose and fragment an extensive continuous into something surrounded by ends, and composed by different fixed ends on itself. Somewhere where discretization becomes evident is, we would say, language, as a form of mediation that is capable of producing discrete values and operating them into specific formats.

The digital works with this very logic, and so it does that we could easily say that language works digitally. The digital is indeed a form of understanding mediation and, in this way, it is also a way of establishing formats through which information can appear as discrete units.

Through this understanding, we can see the digital as a defining dynamic that specifies itself on how representation emerges and how it can be activable and operable. In this sense, we see the process of discretization as economic in its broad sense, because it organizes the production, circulation, and storage of the values that it produces at the time these are produced.

Naked Language
The relation between language and its objects (those that are objectified by the dynamics of language itself) is crucial for understanding the digital. Lacan's distinction between the Real, the Imaginary, and the Symbolic suggests that reality is never encountered independently of symbolic structures. The idea of an immediate presymbolic reality is philosophically problematic as we see.

The problem here is that there is no presymbolic reality. The only way to grasp reality–or the other–is not through, but as symbolic. We would add even that the only way we can grasp and produce the other is through specific technical logics; it is the byproduct of an interaction mediated by specific and multilayered technical logics, being the subject of experience also part of the object of itself, if we think of it not only as a continuity but also as a complex format where the other is signified and discretized into specific scales and localities, where it can be operated easily. That is why language, activated, can signify an object out of a background. That is why we can differentiate between one thing and its other.

Digital formats can therefore be understood as a production by fragmentation for both, the symbolic and its possible operations. They provide structures through which abstraction, classification, and differentiation become possible. The symbolic as a way of understanding the discrete does not merely acts representing. It establishes the ways in which representations are going to be informed both acting as a discrete system and as a mediation logic. This perspective challenges narratives that imagine liberation through an escape from digital mediation. There is no return to an immediate world, and even so, the immediate it is and will always be completely inoperable. 

The brutal form of the immediate

That what is presented can only be conceived inside a metaphysic that can reconcile an absolute way of continuity or, what would be the same, an absolute way of discrete fragmentation. Any accessible process and unity only emerges through multiple layers of technical and symbolic organizations, iterations in between continuous and discontinuous states.

The Digital and the Boundary
One of the most provocative claims in contemporary digital theory is that the digital should be understood as a condition of thought. Without opposing this, we propose a break with that definition and the distinction it assumes from techno-logical dynamics. The way we see it, a technical logic is a condition of thought itself, and can’t be differentiated that much from any form of discretization dynamic. Such a claim suggests that thought operates through processes of abstraction and differentiation analogous to discretization. The thing is what it does. –Intelligence and Spirit, 2018, Reza Negarestani. The digital would then be itself a form of thought if it’s already a format that allows thought to happen–through discretization.

Abstraction separates, yet it also unifies. This is simply because there is no access to reality that would not already involve abstraction.

Since abstraction occurs through a critical dynamic, it takes the form of mediation within a generality; producing the abstract involves repeating the thing upon itself; this requires a process of discretization in which the repeated thing is defined. This way, abstraction discretizes (separates), and abstraction also repeats (unifies). Actually, this abstract leap is the dynamic that brings about the fragmentation into units which defines discretization. Discretization plays a fundamental role in this process. The process that makes possible the step between what is repeated and what is generalized is also the one that is assembling a thing, bounded, surrounded, that is to be differentiated and discretized.

Before a category can unify, that is, to make the unit, boundaries must be established. Abstraction and discretization are thus deeply intertwined. If there is no access to the production of an objectified, tokenized, reality–that is, a set of fragmented values that could be activated and operated within an information process–without abstraction, then the digital can be understood as a form of thought insofar as it provides structures for differentiation and repetition. The digital can then be understood as a technology, that is, a technical logic, a general condition under which thinking is produced and its operability becomes formatted.

Against Metaphysical Discreteness
The world is discrete at its most fundamental level, evidence of which can be found in physics and elsewhere.

This claim risks confusing epistemological operations with ontological descriptions. Fragmentation and differentiation is something that happens within a techno-logical framework. We could argue that a technical logic happens through the interaction with the possible; a technical logic is a specific mediation dynamic that rearranges and produces value. Something that, for example, any body with mass does.

Discretization provides a framework within which differentiation occurs. It presupposes formats capable of producing identifiable units. Without such frameworks, it becomes difficult to explain how difference emerges in the first place. This said, we cannot argue that reality is–ontologically–discrete at its more fundamental level because whatever that is discretized is also becoming in-formation into other complex and emergent units and fragmentations. In other words, we will say that whatever is discretized is always instantly in a tendency towards becoming discretized into something else. If we were to establish one fundamental state of things, such as it being the discrete, we would be talking here about some sort of essence of everything. Something that, for example, can be understood at a linguistic level, in the sense of discretizing information into signifiers, or even in the way language produces identity absolutes in its own way of producing its signifiers. But at the same time, would be cancelled by the very implications of the critical characteristic we see in language when it’s happening, that is, when its technical-logics are being activated. We say, this way, that the world is happening in-formation at a fundamental level, and discretization is only a way for this information to iterate and be grasped. In other words, discretization is the only way of representing movement while its format is that of the static.

We would propose, then, that reality is neither fundamentally continuous nor discrete. The key point here is movement, and understanding the world as a procedural dynamism where nothing is entirely fixed. On the other hand, discretization implies a sort of staticity, something that can make the materials of thought to work, to exist as themselves. We aim to establish a difference between what is operative and what is happening when it becomes part of an operation, that is, a difference between the discrete and the discrete in-formation. Information is dynamic. It is characterized by movement, transformation, and processuality. Discrete units emerge through operations that stabilize portions of informational flows for them to be operative. This way, we can say discretization designates stabilization and differentiation. Neither term can be reduced to the other, both are deeply tied.

Representing Movement as Something Fixed

For Fazi, to represent is to mediate through discretization, and hence representation is, to a large extent, always digital. For Galloway, on the other hand, the digital is a mode of representation.

We need to see where we are locating mediation and representation. For example, If we see an analog image, the process where we differentiate the shapes on the image could effectively be understood as a digital process, a process of discretization. A “digital image” implies a specific process of discretization that produced the image, but the implications of seeing could also fit into what we can understand as a discretization process. 

Aesthetics (dependent on processes of mediation) is not only about sensation or receiving information understood as a passive act; it is also about perception, the making sense of what is sensed. This entails models of knowledge production.

On what is being called digital art, we talk about critical aesthetic experiments that work on a discrete level, producing forms of discretization and working within a materiality that is already discretized from the start. If we follow what we said before about the difference between the staticity of what’s discrete and the mobility of what is in-formation, here we find a kind of paradox, where digital art has to act as a mobile, procedural, dynamic, protocolar and systemic while using fixed elements that are already produced by this discretization process. It is actually not that much of a paradox if we think of it as the logical iterative step between what is fixed and the same when it becomes in-formation.

Both information and discretization imply each other in different ways. Information cannot be grasped as it is because of its dynamism and movement. Literally there is no thing to grasp. In order to do so, we’ll need to make a thing out of it, that is, to discretize it either into differentiated units or as a thing itself, representing this way in-formation as a specific and discrete fragment of something else. Also, for information, with its datum–what is given, the starting point, as well as the telos, its end, what is becoming form, what is finally in-formed, works establishing the boundaries and therefore the fundamental format of the information. Here discrete units produce the information, while is partially contained within a specific format limitation that makes it operate at the same time as a discrete unit in itself.

The same way, a discrete unit needs information to exist in the world, to not be completely isolated from everything else, to be constantly violated by contingencies, where it doesn’t stay fixed as a unit for long. A discrete unit would always become informational, otherwise, it would be alone as an universal absolute and it would contain all its possibilities in itself, containing also the possibility of its own impossibility.
In other words, a discrete unit is unstable by itself, so it has to become in-formation, continuous, while information is impossible to grasp by itself, so it needs to become discrete or even to be fragmented into differentiated discrete units for its movement to be represented and grasped. The central philosophical problem we propose in this article concerns the relation between movement and staticity. Information is characterized by movement. It exceeds fixed identifiers. It is procedural and dynamic. Discretization, by contrast, introduces moments of staticity, fixated instances. It produces units that can be identified, exchanged, and operated.

These units create the conditions for thought, language, and representation. Yet neither pole can exist independently. Information would remain inaccessible because it would never stabilize sufficiently to become identifiable. Discreteness would collapse into absolute isolation, detached from all processes of transformation. Consequently, movement and staticity imply one another. Information requires discretization in order to become intelligible. Discrete units require informational processes in order to persist and change. They exist recursively, not in opposition.

Overview

The digital is better conceived as a format through which mediation becomes operational. Through discretization, digital systems establish boundaries that produce and allocate units. These units behave like values, making thought, allowing representation and exchange.

This account also suggests that debates concerning digital versus analog often miss a deeper philosophical issue. In both cases, we are being confronted with different ways of building generality through repetition. The fundamental tension here–a tension that is completely necessary–is not between two mediation forms but between movement and staticity. Information continuously breaks fixed identities, while discretization produces them in the form of iterations that make information scalable and measurable. The digital immersed in a material context emerges precisely within this reciprocal relation. Understanding the digital framework in this way allows us to rethink abstraction, language, representation, and thought as interconnected operations. We can recognize the digital as one of the fundamental formats through which reality becomes intelligible and actionable.

He works with a wide range of media (video, software, interface, experimental essay, generative AI, 3D, blockchain, datamoshing, performance, interactive installation, among others). RELATED PUBLICATIONS

On Digital FrameworksThe sign would thus be what is given as activatable in a process of abstraction. The system, which does not remain static, is subject to the contingency of the instability produced by the signs that configure it. The system, then, constantly depends on transformations and translations, since its sets of data may be re-signified through processes of abstraction. We would say that any distribution of value is potentially also the production of value through new levels of abstraction. This can be observed in any temporality we apply to any technology.

The conversation emerges from 邊界_systems’ ongoing research into processes of artificialisation and the recursive structures that characterize contemporary technical systems. Through alternating voices that build on and complicate each other's propositions, Margo and Montserrat develop a vocabulary for understanding how computational apparatuses modify substances, produce intersections across different framing systems, and generate new economies not based on format as fixed value.


If it looks like AI, it is AI
“If it looks like painting, it is painting” is, perhaps, a statement that may sound somewhat problematic—and, in fact, is not entirely true. The statement is more complex than it seems. Thus, rather than focusing on the question of “appearance”—whether something looks like something else—this article aims to outline the importance of the technical logics of art within their contextual framework, and how these define the artistic “object” far better than the means of its production. In this sense, rather than strictly focusing on appearance, the aim of this text revolves around the phenomenological question of art and its effective functioning from a material standpoint.

The artistic “object” here should not be understood as an object, but rather as the eventuality of a series of intra-material complexities that define—or delimit—a specific work of art. That is to say, we will not understand art as object-oriented, but as a phenomenon in which a large number of material agents intervene: its means of production, its socio-cultural context, its historical framework, and so on.

implicit-explicit is an interface-driven, multimodal game exploring questions around digital frameworks, embodiment, language, navigation, the emergence of computational bodies and information as a constant-evolving process. It question the status of gaming itself through an experimental process that unifies research with production and tries to avoid the material constraints of the common cultural understandings around gaming and digital frameworks.

The goal of implicit-explicit is to mutate a text-based body in order to increase its stable & dimensional complexity using content inputs &/or modifications. It can be played via solo exploration or within a competitive multiplayer context. 

This body is mutated through navigation and movement that emerges from the central possibility of destabilising and re-stabilising the parameters and positions of its content. These modifications and activations of linguistic content allow one to navigate a sort of labyrinth of interfaces, open ‘doors’ and accumulate layers of representativeness, following a specific set of parameters and operating from questions that delve into the possibility of an effectively operational content within the digital framework.

This game emerges as a project within Sybil's residency, where, for six months, the 邊界 team will be working on developing the project with the help of collaborators.

During this time, the 邊界 team is committed to producing an extensive series of parallel materials related to this project, which will include both research practices and new publication formats, as well as artistic side projects working with different materials, physical events and more.



D/WB2025The d/wb (desert/wet box) project, developed over a year across Madrid, London, and San Francisco, CA, constitutes a sustained inquiry into the entangled domains of artificial intelligence, cybernetics, semiotics, and technological mediation. Composed of three interrelated works — the wet box, third extension, and fieldware —, it functions as an experimental probe into the processes by which signs are produced, abstracted, and ultimately activated as vectors of value.


S02STATEMENTFrom within 邊界_systems, we interrogate the limitations and potentials that the digital framework offers for operating the format from an extensive perspective—that is, operating from the framework with the framework, from the limit with the limit, from the edge with the edge. We approach the format in the digital context not as a fixed entity but as a malleable cultural instrument, enabling geometric multiplicities and the production of emergent fields.

arises with the intention of unsettling institutional stasis and the geography of fields of action and knowledge, directly probing the structures that constitute cultural apparatuses and seeking to displace and reimagine possible formal configurations that may open onto new modalities of research and artistic production. Format s02 emerges centered on these practices, seeking to reconceptualize and reconcile the operative possibilities—both aesthetic and theoretical—within the conditions of digital culture, situating its inquiry at the limit, the edge, the frame, the frontier / from the philosophy of language, memory, the geometric and the abstract, the systems and the activable, and the processes of producing value, meaning, and identity.
